LIGHTING-UP TIMES. To-day 6.43 p.m. Wednesday _. 6.44 p.m. Thureclay ■ 6.45 p.m. Fnday 6.45 p.mSaturday 6.46 p.m. Sunday 6.46 p.m. Monday 6.47 p.m. JOIN THE A.A.A. The Auckland Automobile Association is inaugurating a campaign amongst the i motorists of this city who are not j attached to any club. It is hoped to ! double the present membership within j three months. The scheme provides for j the engagement of a canvasser for a i period of three months at a salary and j commission. In addition to advertising j in the daily Press, notices displaying the words "Join the Auckland Automobile Association,'' will be prominently placed in the garages and every member of tile Association will be asked to display a similar slip on the windscreen of his car. It is also proposed to offer a commission to garages for every member enrolled and to relieve members of the association of a year's subscription for every three members enrolled. It is further intended to hold hill-climbing and other competitions with a view to giving added attractions to the association's motor runs, and to hold a smoke concert and presentation of prizes after the date of tlie annual meeting. There is no doubt that the number of motorists in the city and nearby district| who take no personal interest in this sbody is very great, and there is ample room for a large increase in the ranks. Tho scope and good work could be greatly increased with double the present inccune and the aims of the association are heartily endorsed by "Sparkwell."

A DANGER POST NEEDED. A correspondent writes to say that he would like to draw the attention of tlie Auckland Automobile Association to a nasty little hill with an "S" curve on I the Taupo-Hauiilton_ Road. Going to j Tutipo, about three'and a-half miles ; before reaching the Atiamuri Hotel, I the road comes out of the MauI ngaiti deviation and there is a ! mile of good road, but suddenly it | drops down a sharp hill and round this 1 *_" curve, a regular trap for the unwary ! motorist, and a board at this point would |be a safeguard appreciated by country I motorists and visitors. Our correspond- | ent also says that there are quite a | number of hills on our country roads ; that are fearfully rutty and water ! worn, which would be saved and made 1 quite passable if water channels were I put in and a drain or two put across at the curves. There is such a hill leading down to the bridge on the Waikato River at Atiamuri. Motorists know this particular hill very well, and what a rotten surface it has, and how little it would take to improve that portion. OIL FOR CHASSIS LUBRICATION. Having found that the luhricant from a grease-gun failed to circulate within; certain chassis bearings—spring shackles j and steering swivel bearings, for ex- \ ample (the latter in particular)—one; motorist has for some while been using i thick oil instead of grease in the force- j pump. It is a great improvement, for, j although some of it is even more prone ' than grease to escape from the end-s of j the bearings while it is being introduced, j he oil that remains creeps over the | whole of the surfaces instead of leaving I all except a mere streak done-dry —which is what happens more often than not, when grease is used, as has repeatedly i been found when dismantling grease-1 lubricated parts. |
