TROUBLE IN THE CELLS.

ARRESTED MEN ASSAULTED. KICKED WHEN DOWN. At the Police Court this morninp George Banks (23), pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, and of assaulting Albert Wrijrht. He pleaded not guilty to assaulting Henry Treanor. Treanor stated that he was locked up for drunkenness on iSaXurday. and was placed in a cell with two other men, Wright and accused. Witness reluctantly admitted to Senior Sergeant Kawle that accused had kicked him on the chin. "It wasn't much, only a scratch," said witness. Wright, whose head was swathed in bandages, deposed that accused got him down on the floor of the cell, kicked him, then chewed h/s car. As a result, witness had to receive medical attention. When asked if he had any questions to ask Wright, accused said "1 thougnt he was the man who pushed mc in Queen Street.' , Mr. l'oyirbon: How long; have you been in Auckland?— Only two days, sir. .Mr. l'oynton: Kicking a man when he is down it always punished with innpri.-i----onment here, you will be sentenced to one month for assaulting Wrijrht, and convicted and discharged for assaulting Treanor. Later in the morning Banks made another appearance. Senior Sergeant Ra-wle stated that it had been found that accused was on the s.s. Maliana, and was able to pay a fine. Under the cire,um±»ance3 the Senior Sergeant thought that it would be as well if Banks was lined instead of remaining in the country. Mr. Poynton agTeed to the suggestion and imposed a line of £5, in default one month's imprisonment. Half of the fine was ordered to be handed to Wright.
