ENGLISH CRICKETERS.

MAKE A START AT PERTH. 330 FOR SEVEN WICKETS. PERTH, October 19. 1 The English cricketers opened their Australian tour yesterday with a match against West Australia. " The conditions did not favour a display of the visitors' full merits. Following upon their long sea voyage, heavy rain had prevented them from securing much preliminary practice. The visitors halted first. The wicket was sodden and favoured the .bowlers. 1 The batting was slow until late in tho j afternoon, when the pitch improved. In spit of these drawbacks the Englishmen i made the most of a difficult position. rhey had scored 330 runs for sevon . wickets when stumps were drawn. | Kilner and Douglas played free, stylish and punishing cricket. Kilncr's score .of 103 included four sixes. ] The first century appeared on the board after 120 minutes' play, tho second after 21a minutes, nnd the third after 272 I minutes. | Fremantle. an ex-Victorian, secured the bowling honours, taking four wickets : for 118 runs. The scores were: -SutclifTe 30, Sandham -8, Hearne 15, Woollev 7, Chapman 34, Douglas 62, Kilner 103, Gilligan 20 (not out), Tate 18 (not out).---(A. and N.Z.) AN ATTRACTIVE DISPLAY. GILLIGAN'S FREE STYLE. (Received It; noon.) PERTH, this day. The crowd at the cricket match greeted Chapman with cheers when he went to the crease, and grew expectant. The Englishman batted most attractively, and many daring singles were stolen by the visitors. Kilner made some powerful strokes without much apparent effort. The crowd good-naturedly indulged in a little barracking at the expense of Douglas. Gilligan exhibited a fine free sweeping style, and hit a ball to mid-off that lamed one fieldsman, who was forced to retire. Sandman used his feet well and showed a partiality for the lalte cut. TALL SCORING IN SYDNEY. IN HOWELL BENEFIT MATCH. SYDNEY, October 19. The Howell benefit cricket match, New South Wales v. Australia, was continued yesterday. New South Wales in their first innings made 645 runs (Kelleway 101, Carter 58, Mailey 25 not out). Hornibrook took two wickets for 141 runs, Orimmett three for 133, A. Richardson two for 113. Australia compiled 240 for seven wickets (Ratcliffe 132 not out, \. Richardson 22, Clem Hill 40). The weather was fine and the wicket good. Kellewav and Carter nut on 00 for the ninth wicket for New South Wales, and for the last wicket Mailev helped Kellewav to add 59. With the exception of Ratcliffe, who gave a firstclass nnd pluekv display against the keen bowling and fielding, and of fhe old champion. Clem Hill, the Australian team made a poorish showing. They appeared to be overburdened by the enormous score piled up against them. — (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
