A tragic fire, resulting in the death of J Mrs. C. Yates, aged 70 years, and the i narrow escape of twin babies, occurred in a residential establishment at Dar[linghurst late last night. The owner of the premises emelt smoke, and rushed upstairs just in time to remove her babies. She heard a woman in a room where the seat of the fire was apparently located, Jnd screamed for help. A passing seaman named Edward Dess made several gallant attempts to rescue the woman. The roof fell in on him, and he was compelled to retire. By the time the brigade arrived the room was a mass of flames, and further ■attempt at rescue was hopeless.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
