HINTS TO YOUNG BOWLERS.
HOW TO MAKE THE BALL SWERVE. My remarks about the match winning possibilities of good bowling have inspired one youthful reader to write mc to ask a few hints on how to bowl well. Whether I am qualified to do so may be doubted by my candid friends, who say I get wickets by bad bowling. However these are the principles upon which I work to get the wickets that are credited to mc. The first thing i& good length, for only by keeping a good length can you get the batsman on the defensive to try your wiles upon him. Also I may Bay I never try to bowl faeter than is comfortable for mc. Other, wise it is easy to lose command of length and direction. I put the seam between my first and second fingers, for thus it : is possible to swerve the balL ; To the young bowler I would say, don't take too long a run, and don't be 1 afraid of bowling a bad ball, as there " are ten other players to help you to get the batsman out. I am a gTeat believer in bowling, even intentionally, occasional | bad ones. My candid friends say they never saw anyone get wickets with sucli rubbish as I sometimes send down. They J are perfectly right, too, as I find tha"t > most batsmen can be got out with bad 1 balls. j Never give up trying ac hard as yoi » know how to get the batsmen separated p If they hit you now and then for si? t don't worry. They won't hit them all r Never mind about averages; think abou > getting tbe wicket. The batsman walkinj ; back to Idle pavilion is a cheering si"h'
