CIVIC ACTIVITIES.

ALL-ROUM) CRITICISM. An occasional egg drifted their way, and varied interjections from the crowd interrupted them, when three speakers last evening stood in the back of a motor car, surrounded by all the debris that marks the spot where the Civic Square will one day stand, and criticised the Mayor, the City Council, the proposed square, the tramways, the traffic inspectors the Zoo, the waterfront railway, and numerous other interests fostered l>y the municipal fathers. A further liijely diversion ensued when someone threw a bunch of spluttering fireworks. However, the Speakers got through. Their words were, no doubt, well meant, but one of them, at least, lost much of his effeci fc'.venesa by numerous droll expressions which, quite innocently, he introduced into his discourse. "When we look forward 80, 70, GO years,' , was one of his expressions. "He's gO/ing backwards," yelled someone in the amused crowd. The speaker then told his listeners that some of the shopkeepera whose premises had been pulled down had applied for an "extinction" of their leases. (Renewed mirth.) Turning his attention to the interjectors, he quite spoiled a remarkable outburst by ending with, "If some of these young fellows had lived 30 or 40 year 3 more like we have they'd have more sense." (Guffaws.) After a few more words the chief speaker drove off in Ivs motor ear, and the crowd melted away.
