CARTERTON RACES.

A WIN FOR MERRY DAY.

CARTERTON, this day. TnJre was a large attendance for the second day of the Carterton Racing Club's meeting. The course was in splendid order. The weather was overcast but fine. Happy Days (Mackic) ran a great race 111 [he Maungarikl Handicap, and won as ho liked. Kilceit came well at first, but made uo impression on Happy Days. The Bunny Memorial Handicap provided another good race and the result was uncertain right up to the last stride, when Killochra, which ran a splendid race, got the verdict by a nose from the fast finishing Santonlo. Close finishes wcro the order of the meetins. »nd still another was provided in the Taratahi Hack, All Gold, Bonomel, Hall Murk nnd Willow Will made the running early, but down the straight Lipsol, I'routo and Tlnnluul (Omenl cmiie uway, and 111 a great struggle Tinohari won by a nose. King Broney was tbe outsider lor tbe Trial Plate, but ran a solid race all through, and won comfortably by half a length from Azcota, which went well at the business end of the race. ' The Cup was one of the most keenly contested races seen on the course for many years. Lady Ben, KUfaire and Festivity led the field early in the race, the latter shaping very nicely. Merry Day (R. Reed) was always handy, and moved up coming Into the straight, where a great nice between the Merry Moment mare, Santiago, and Festivity took place. Merry Day came fast aud repeated her Masterton Cup performance, winning by a bare length, with Festivity close up. The Carrington Hack Welter provided an exciting finish. Crlslma, Killoch and Dominant were most prominent In the early part of the race. Kyoto came temporarily into the picture, then Gluement. Killoch and Proclaim came away and a great race down the straight saw heads only separate the placed horses. The Carterton Hack Handicap provided another splendid race, the result being In douht right till tbe last, Westbrook Just setting home from Lady Gay by a short bead.
