OPENING DAY OF THE SEASON. GOLD LIGHT WINS AVONDALE CTJP. ATJTOMNE THE STAKES. ___ . m The racing of the Auckland district was opened successfully to-day by the Avondale Jockey Club. As a rule, the weather associated with the Spring Meeting of the club is of a stormy nature, but this year the fates were kinder to the club, and the threatening conditions of the past few days cleared up in time to give a typically spring day for the event. There was naturally a large attendance to welcome back the popular sport. Owing to the recent rains the course was °a bit holding. As usual, the arransements of Mr. A. J. Farquhar and h"s staff were excellent. Kesults were: —

The big held was dispatched to a good start, from which Son o' Mine showed out first, anil he led round the turn fr;>m Passionate, Tactician, Miss Vera, Tall iiuioti-, __eh Ami- and Kendal, with Parodist last. Son o* Mine showed the way along the back, closely followed by Exactly, Tactician Miss Vera, Tall Timber, aud Winkie's Wheel, which were racing in that order. The leading trio was unchanged as they came round the turn. Miss Vera still being fourth, with Tall Timber and Arch Aniio next. Son o Mine led right to the distance, where Tactician, Arch Amie and Miss Vera all challenged. Tactician headed Sou o' Mine in the last bit and won by a neck, with Arch Anne a head away, third, and Miss Vera a similar distance away next. Then came lall Timber, Steel Bar, Passionate, Exactly and Winkie's Wheel. Son o' Mine was favourite. I Time 1.5S 1-5.

Advent and Highway were fractious at the start, but a splendid dispatch was effected, and Greekson went out to make the pace, being followed by Highway, Prince Rufus, LandbirU, Advent, Peter Amans, and Miss Micky, but Peter Amans fell at the second hurdle. Going along the back Greekson was joined \by Highway, while Landbird headed Prince Rufus. As they

came past the stand Highway was clear of Landbird,- with Greekson, Prince Kufus, I Miss Micky, Advent, Totara Jack, Earthshine, Karamu and Never Despair following In that order, with General Rose last. Going along the back the second time Prince Kufus fell, Landbird taking the lead from Highway and putting a break on the field, which was led by Highway, with Miss Micky and Greekson the only others to have a chance. Though Landbird wus still clear as they came round the home bend. Highway had decreased the advantage as they came at the last hurdle, and once over Highway drew out to win by half a length with Miss Micky, which made up a good deal of ground in the last round, third, two lengths away. Greekson was five lengths away, fourth, being followed by Karamu, Never Despair, General Kose and Totara Jack. Explorer fell at the second, hurdle from home. Time, 3.48.

Golden Autumn was first to move, lint Oration immediately rushed to the front, and -was followcJ by Mimetic, Xastorl, Golden Autumn, Air Queen. King Lv and Automnc. Oration held the l?nd as they came ronnd-the turn, where Mimetic, Hyde Park, Automne, and Lady Cavendish were also prominent. Automne got a run on the rail, and finishim brilliantly beat Hyde 'Park by balf a length. Lady Cavendish flnished very fast, and -va_ a neck a.vay, third. Golden Autumn wan ouly halt a length away, fourth, and then came Mimetic, Father O'Flynu, and King Lu. Time, 1.4.

Gold Light shot ont at the distance, and though Bnomerday cut down his field rapidly, the top weight won comfortably by three-quarters of a len-th. with Musketoon half a length away, fhird.
