BIG OIL FIRE.
FOUR UVES LOST. IGNITED BY LIGHTNIHG. NEW YORK, September 16. 1 Lightning last evening struck a tank containing 55,000 barrels of crude oil at Monterey, 89 miles south-east of San Francisco. " As a result a fire was started which is likely to cost 3,000,000d01. Four soldiers have so far lost their lives, in fighting the flames. Efforts are now being directed to saving the old town of Monterey. It is the historic site-of the first government of California, beloved by writer and artist.' A dozen homes have been destroyed, and a large part of the plant of the Associated Oil Company has been demolished by the fire. The flames spread to a tank containing 100,000 barrels of'ibenzine. The outbreak is spreading. It now threatens ] the property of the Standard Oil Company.— (Reuter and "Sun.")
