The Governor-General, Lord Jellicoe, ] and Lady Jellicoe will pay their farewell visit to the South Island next month, leaving Wellington on October 6. Miss Betty Fisher, who has been visiting her aunt, Miss Bromley Cocks, Christchurch, has returned to Auckland. ' "I Violet Day in Christchurch, organised by the Plunket Society, and held on Wednesday, realised £434. , Miss Dorothea Spinney, who is well | known'for her remarkable recitation of . the Greek drama and plays by the , writers of the Irish renaissance, intends , to re-visit New Zealand about April of next year. Mrs. W. Stevenson and Miss T. Stevenson, of Woodford Road, Mt. Eden, returned from Wellington by Sunday's express, the latter taking part in the Wellington competitions, winning two seconds in the mezzo-soprano solos. She was four times highly commended. Dr. Dorothy Sweeney has left Christchurch for the north to take up her duties as school medical officer in the Auckland district. Miss E. Tonks, Auckland, was one of the guests at the Vice-regal ball held in Wanganui,- at which their Excellencies were present. The Papakura Beautifying Sqciety held a successful fancy fair in "* the Methodist Hall. All the stalls were artistically decorated with ■ .red. roses and peach blossoms and the''-hall presented a very animated appearance. The net results were a little over £90 for the day. showing very clearly that the residents of Papakura appreciate the fine work that is 'being accomplished by this enterprising society. It is understood that the total amount will probably be in the vicinity of £100, if not over. Various competitions were held during the day, the prizes being presented after the sale '-by Mr. S. Evans. The following assisted at the various stalls: Work stall, Mesdames R. Willis. R. K. Willis and Pavitt; produce stall, Mesdames. A. Willi3 and l>. W. Jones; cake stall, Mesdames Crawford and Mcßae: sweet stall, The Misses J. Walker, J. Little and J. Wilson; refreshments, Mesdames E. D. Labour-saving cottages, where nearly everything is done by electricity, have just been erected near East .Hothly, in the heart of peaceful- Sussex. . They have been designed and .built by Mrs. Annabel Dott, the energetic wife of the ! rector of Barnes, Middlesex. In Grey! Wood, a beautiful estate of 50 acres,' which she bought for th»t purpose, she has erected 17 cottages, which have their own power station, electric light, electric laundry, electric washer-up, refrigerating plant, communal bakehouse, electric irons and electric kettles. Nine of the cottages are in one quadrangle, and these have the advantage of a "central hot-water supply. Although the houses have the latest labour-saving devices they have a delightful oldfashioned appearance, with thatched roofs and' panelled roome. Mrs. Dott engaged the carpenters, bricklayers and other workmen. The newest waterproofs are- mad 3 from a kind of black oilskin that looks exactly like satin when wet. Douglas Davys, Pukuatua Street, accompanied by her small daughter, has left on a visit to Sydney and will be the guest of her mother, Mrs. Sledge. Miss Gwen Griffith, Hamilton, is the guest of Miss Corlett, 'Hinemoa Street. Mrs. Brandon has returned to Rotorua and is among the .guests at Brent's Bathgate House. An enjoyable dance, under the auspices of St. Luke's Cricket Club, in aid of the club's funds, was held on Thursday night. The hall and stage were effectively decorated with bamboo, ferns, pink camellias and coloured streamers. Success attended the annual social of I the Loyal Rotorua Lodge, M.U.. 1.0.0. F., •on Wednesday eveninjr. A 500 tournament was held, the ladies' first prize bein"- won by Mrs. Onyon. Mrs. Mooreland" winning the booby prize. The gentlemen's prize was won by Mr. T. SlcDowell, while 'Mr. Mooreland won the booby prize. A children's party, given annually by - the Whakarewarewa Anglican Ladies' Guild, was' held in the Mission Hall, Devon Street on Friday evening.
