TAKAPUNA FIRE.

(To the^Editoc.) Sir, —At about 6.15 p.m. on the 4th inst. I heard the alarm of fire at Richardson's store, and seizing my fire . extinguisher I hurried to the spot, where already neighbours were helping. The place was a roaririg furnace, the plate glass falling cmt. I got the extinguisher to work-, with deadly effect, arid we soon had the fire under control. Then the brigade arrived and played their part from the tank. Some delay was caused by the nozzle having to be coupled to the. hose. By this time the fire was out, but still the water was poured oii and then came a call from the firemen to fill up the tank. Now, sir, why is the nozzle hot kep"t'. coupled up always in readiness. Ftom the experience I have of fires I am Sure had' no other means been available the brigade would have been helpless to cope with the fire, which was only a few hundred yards from the station, although to give them i heir dues they were quickly on the scene.' Some £2000 has been spent on this toy, whereas to my mind, if a light car, together with a few large extinguishers were purchased the cost -would have been under £500. I don't know what-Major Wilkie thinks of it, bui I would certainly advise him to pet a few extinguishers | and work them in conjunction with the ' engine.—E- am, etc., THE COUPLED NOZZLE.
