OUTBREAK ON KAIKOURA. SUPPRESSES AFTER FOUR HOURS' FIGHTING. AUCKLAND SHIPMENTS DAMAGED. { (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) i WELLINGTON, Sunday. c Fire on the Federal liner Kaikoura, now lying at the Wellington wharf, t damaged a considerable quantity of E • cargo, mostly copra. j The fire was discovered at midnight 1 on Saturday on the starboard side of i ! the vessel aft. It had then secured a < , good hold. The services of the city ■; : brigade were secured, the ship's hose i was also brought into play, and tha z harbour tugboat also came to the j •' rescue. » I With the plant available not mveh. j difficulty was experienced in extinguish-i ;. ing the fire. A large quantity of water was poured into the hold. The fire brigade did splendid work, | j despite dense smoke and noxious fumes from burning copra and kauri gum. So * thick was the smoke that firemen had to . don smoke helmets. They fought the fire for about four hours, and eventually overcame it. A considerable quantity of kauri gum - : was destroyed, as well as some timber. * ! So terrific was the heat that the wire- ' '. less apparatus on deck over the hold ' • was much damaged, as was also the carpenter's and boatswain's quarter, and the deck was warped .Three cabins were ; burnt out. The cargo that was damaged * ' was loaded at Auckland. [
