ATHLETICS BEAT PONSONBY. ANOTHER WIN TO MARISTS, CUTS EASY WIN. „ The League Club competitions were continued on Saturday at Carlaw •Park. Athletics had jnatters all their own way in the second half and won by 36 to 21. On No. 2 ground at Cartaw Park, Manst had an easy win aver Ellerslie, the game ending in favour of the greens t>y 10 points to 2. The winners played with excellent combination, while Ellerslie, besides lack of combination, failed, to tackle well. Short time, two spells of 35 minutes each, were played. At Victoria. Park City beat Jfewton comfortably by 16 to 3. ATHLETIC V. PONSONBY. The first bright item was when McNeil and Littlewood brought off a bout of passing which Dufty brought to an end, and when the Ponies were hammering away near Athletics line the same player got in a useful kick. A nice run by Delgrosso and a short punt had Athletic bothered and keeping up the attack, Snedden dashed over and scored in the corner. Delgrosso railed to convert. Ponsonby 3, Athletic 0. Dufty then set his team going when he got the ball from McGregor, and he and Tardley indulged in reverse passing till Dufty sent in to Mason. The latter handed on to Hadley, -who finished off a fine- movement with a score. Dtofty landed a fine goal. Athletic v, Ponsonby 3. Almost immediately the Ponies returned to the attack, and, throwing the ball about in fine style, a long pass was well taken by Snedden on the wing, and he dashed down the line, to again score in the corner. Continuing to have the best of the play, Ponsonby soon added to their score. Brilliant work by Delgrosso, Shirley, and Peekham ended with Donovan almost get:ing_ over in the corner. Next minute McNeil sent the ball to Littlewood, the latter going on to score. Dels-'rosso aid not convert, and Ponsonby led 1C to 5. McGregor made a fine run and then kicked for Dufty to gather in, only to be brought down by McNeil right on the line. Sustaining the attack. Within two minutes after the resumption of play an onslaught by Athletic saw Wilson-Hall send a pass to Hadley, and he ran across to score. Dufty goaled with a fine kick, and the score read Ponsonby 16, Athletic 15. Hardly had the scores again, McGregor and Dufty handling the ball twice for McGregor to score right in the corner. Dufty kicked a beautiful goal, and received the applause of the crowd. Athletic 20, Ponsonby IG. Prom loose play the ball was kicked- to Woods, who badly beat the Ponsonby full-back and scored wide out. This time Dufty failed with a difficult shot. Athletic 23, Ponsonby IG. Within one minute Webb picked up the foall and handed to Avery, who went over under the posts. Dufty made no mistake, and the score went to 28. Marist kicked off, Gardiner securing and making a run down the line. Ellerslie replied with a dribbling rush, which Gregory stopped, and, gathering up the ball, ran through <nd "punted well downneld. However, Gregory saved, and again placed Marist on, the attack. After strenuous efforts Robinson threw the ball to jMolloy, who beat three Ellerslie men, and got over. /W. Stormont added the extra points. Marist 7, Ellerslie 0. Not long afterwards Ellerslie found themselves hard-pressed. From the ruck O'Brien picked tip smartly, and had no difficulty in scoring under the posts. W. St*rraont converted. Marist 10, Ellerslk 0. Ellerslie niarte repeated attempts to penetrate the s ng defence of the other side, but were unsuccessful up to the interval. Marist ]U. Ellerslie 0. On resuming Johnston was penalised for obstructing an Ellerslie player, and Stand kicked a goal. Marist 10, Ellerslie 2. Marist Instituted a nice forward onslaught, which ended in Corleson passing across to Molloy, who dived over Gardiner's kick failed. Marist 13 Ellerslie 2. Marist remained In Ellerslie's territory f6r several minutes. Newton opened, and confined play to their opponents' quarter. A scrum in the corner gave promise of an early score, but a free eased the position for City. Newton continued to press hard, and were awarded a free kick. Mansill took a shot, but the ball went wide. Soon afterwards, from a scrum, Newton gained another infringement kick, but again Mansill failed to put the ball over. Ultimately, the city pack penetrated the Newton defence and got across the half-way line for the first time. G. Davidson took a shot from a free, but missed. City were now warming up, and made a fine dash dowr, Ruby leading, and Purdy finding the line. G. Davidson did not convert. City 3, Newton 0. Newton came down fast, and made several ineffectual passing dashes. From a furthet free, Mansill had a shot, but again the ball went wide. A series of scrums in City's quarter followed, but City reversed the position when Davidson picked np and Brown followed, getting within a foot of the line. Then, from a scrum, Thorburn took the leather and scored. L. Brown converted. City S, Newton 0. Passing dashes were much in evidence, but City defended well. The half-time score remained: City 8, Newton 0. , The second spell was opened with a dash down by Newton, followed by a tussle on City's line. The City forwards subsequently got away, L. Brown leading, but again Newton came down. A fine kick by B. Davidson went ont to L. Srown, who rushed up on a practically clear field, and scored in the corner. B. From a scrum •which followed, Clarke dashed down, and play was confined to City's corner, where a number of scrums took place, followed by a tussle, from which . Campney scored two tries for the winners and Hani on converted both. Paul scored for I Mangere and converted the try. The : game was fairly, even, but Richmond well deserved their win. Richmond were I superior in the back division. JUNIOR REP. MATCH. The curtain-raiser between Auckland and Hamilton representatives was fairly interesting, and Auckland won bj. 14 points to S.
