Norton, of the Everest expedition, in a final dispatch discussing some of the reasons for failure, says: "The thing that really matters is lack of oxygen. This not merely makes itself felt when men are walking up hill; it permeates and dominates every minute of the climber's life and saps all his energy. The effects of exertion and altitude are increased consistently right to the top of the mountain. All determination and will to conquer are seriously weakened. c The rapid intake of breath causes desiccation of the whole bodily system accompanied by intense depression of spirits." Colonel Norton adds: "The monsoon season defiuitelv set in. and the expedition shot its bolt. Members are recuperating in a sheltered valley, whence they will return to Darjeeling."—(Sun.)
