THE NORTHCOTE SLIP.
REPAIR WORKS RECOMMENDED. The problem of permanently repairing the locality of the recent land subsidence at Northcote, which resulted in the sensational destruction of the residence of Mr. P. W. Bolland in May last, was the subject of a report to the Northcote Borough Council last night by Mr. F. E. Powell. C. E. Mr. Powell wrote that the main slip was still moving towards the sea, and, in his opinion, would continue to do so for some considerable time, unless measures were taken to prevent it. However successful these measures would be, the ground above would continue to shrink and settle in itself, so that no reliance could be placed on this ground to help in supporting Queen Street. He recommended that retaining walls of ironbark, which should last for forty years, be put in. The estimated cost of 'the main wall, for a length of 84 feet, was £1300, and for a wall at Queen Street approximate length 56 feet, £800. Consideration of the report is to be given when the estimates are being discussed.
