A CHILLY WELCOME. WASHINGTON, June 27. The immigration authorities have technically confirmed the deportation orders against Lady Wernher. They have, however, permitted her and her I child to land under an indefinite parole. (A. and N.Z. Cable.) Ladj- Theodora Wernher, daughter-in-law of Lady Ludlow, was detained upon her arrival at New York from Italy at the beginning of this week, with her month-old daughter, who was born in Milan. Lndy Wernher. although she was born in Leningrad (formerly Petrograd), was admissible under the ruling that an alien resident of the United States may return after six months' absence, lint her infant was inadmissible because the Italian quota was exhausted. Lady Wernher's husband. Sir Derrioij Wernher. who hns been a resident of the United States for the past five years, is at present in England. He was on a tour of Italy with his wife. Through j illness. Lady Wernher returned to the United States with her liniby and nurse. An appeal was made tn Washington. Tn the meantime, the Xnw York officials decided that th» law must be rigorously I enforced. Mother, chid. and nurse were. i therefore, taken to Ellis Island, ostensibly to await deportation.
