MINISTER AT WASHINGTON, j WASHINGTON, June 27. j > The State Department announces the ■ receipt from Britain of a formal notification to the effect that henceforth the i Irish Free State will be represented at < Washington by its own Minister. The j i latter will be empowered to deal I i directly with the United States On mat- I ters exclusively relating to the Irish Free j The Secretary of State (Mr. C. E. j Hughes) has informed the British Am- , bassador (Sir Esme Howard) that the:] United States cordially approves the j arrangement. The British Embassy will, however, continue to negotiate matters of Imperial concern, or those which affect the Dominions generally, in com- i mon with the Free State. ' The identity of the first Irish Free i State Minister has not been .disclosed, J but reports from Dublin indicate that i the Free State Government lias selected Professor Thomas Smiddy. who is now v resident in Washington.— (A. and N.Z. r and Router.) |*
