RAILWAY FINANCE.
PROFITS FOR MAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Railway working account for the four-weekly period ending May 24, shows a profit of £99,610. For the corresponding period of last year, the profit was £100,502. The strike extended over three days at the beginning of the period. Gross earnings for the period were £499,431, as against £519,211 last year, while expenses were £399,821, as against £415,709. In the North Island the decline in the receipts was £297,010, as against £307,459, and in tho Soutlt Island, £201,821, as against £211,752. Expenses in the North Island, £216,372, show a reduction of £14,151, those in the South, £183,450, were lower by £4735. Consequently, net earnings in the North Island, £81,233, show an increase of £4302, while those in the South Island, £18,371, are lower by £5196.
