ISLAND BASES.

A WORLD FLIGHT. ' ' TRAWLER'S ADVENTUROUS . VOYAGE. TOKYO, May 1. Following an adventurous voyage of two months in the turbulent Arctic seas, the Canadian trawler, Thiepval, which is establishing bases for the British world flight expedition, has arrived at Paramushiru, the most northern island of the Kurile Groupj Japan. A message from Paramushiru states that .the party expects to continue south along the Kurile Islands shortly. Permission must be received from Tokyo to allow calls to be made at places other than Kaihiwabara Bay and Hitokap-j puwa, which at present are the only two permitted. Two Japanese liaison officers have boarded the Thiepval. and will remain with her while in Japanese waters. Lieutenant-Colonel L. E. Broome, who is in charge, stated that all was well. | Bases, he said, had been established at I Petropavlovsk and East Kamchatka, i Bering Island, Attn (Aleutian Islands),! and other places along the Aleutians, i The jumps were much shorter than ; those for the America world flight expe- j dition. i Ten days' provisions, fuel, and | spare parts were located along the line. ! The weather had been extremely disagreeable throughout the trip, which began on March 1., j Lieutenant Colonel Broome. owin<i to the bad weather, is not over optimistic regarding the trans-Pacific stage of the flight. He intimated that the Americans , might not arrive from the "Aleutians fori some considerable time. He expected the British airmen to arrive at Tokyo about the middle of June. On account of life knowledge of the weather conditions and bases LieutenantColonel Broome will accompany the airmen as far as Vancouver. He does not discount the peril of the attempt at any time. Nothing has been left undone to ensure the success of the flight, he said, but it I was a long-odds gamble at the best. The weather at Paramushiru had cleared np slightly, but is still unfavourable.
