RAILWAYS DISPUTE.
TERMS OF SETTLEMENT. WEEK'S 'WORK EXTENDED. FOUR HOURS EXTRA. ;|£j (By Telegraph.—Specitl to " Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. It is likely that within a few days an announcement will be made regarding the method of investigating the railwaymen's claims in terms of the arrangement made that work be first resumed. Another important development is imminent. The Railway Department, it is reported., will shortly make up weekly duty sheets of employees, so as to provide for a week's work of 48 hours, instead of 44. formerly the basis of a week's work. Adoption by the Department of a 48-hour week would be carry- ; ing out its representation to the Wages Board that if the men were prepared to j work another four hours weekly they: would receive on the average 7/2 more in wages. The railwaymen's representafives themselves criticised the Depart- • ment for failing to work the men the full 44 hours weekly, and pointed to the fact that under the former agreement it was j entitled to work them an additional four hours over 44 hours at ordinary rates. Probably this is the principle on which | the Department proposes to operate, as it is hardly likely, in face of an early ■ investigation of working conditions, ' that it would introduce a 48-hour week as it is generally understood in outside industries. , I
