NOW FIRST PUBLISHED. The Publishers were in possession of r<. unpublished manuscript by the late Mr John Fen ton, giving a History of th. Poverty Hay Massacre, and the prolongs warfare that followed that awful tragedy. This history was placed in the hands ol Captain Gilbert Mair, N.Z.C. and Captaii LJ A. Preece. N.Z.C. who took an activi part in the campaign from the beginning md were in command of the two Nativi .ontingents, which finally killed, captured ir dispersed the remnant of Te Kooti'i narauding bands, and compelled the rebe ender to take refuse anion., the Waikatf ;r t_es, who at that lime were living it iullen' isolation, after the Waikato War. Captain Preece had kept a diary through .nt the whole of those operations an. 'Rom the material thus gathered has heel vritten a vivid first-hand account of ih. nost arduous bush fighting recorded in tb< mnals of Nev,- Zealand colonisation.
