CONDUCT OF THE MEN.
MAGISTRATE'S HIGH TRIBUTE. EXCELLENT IN EVERY WAY. From the Bench in the Police Court yesterday" Mr. J. XV. Poynton paid a ■ high tribute to the excellent conduct of the men of the Imperial Service Squadron. He said that he felt he must congratu- | late the men. Thousands of sailors had I been about the city during the week, and there had not been any trouble. In fact, so good had their conduct been that the police had not made a single arrest, and not | one man from all the warships had ap-1 ! peared 'before him in the Court. They had shown excellent behaviour. Tiiey, Poynton mentioned that when the Aus-' tralian cruiser Melbourne recently j visited Auckland those men were also well behaved, and gave no trouble. Senior Sergeant Rawle endorsed the remarks made by Mr. Poynton. There had not, he said, 'been even a suspicion against the men of the visiting naval force. The fine example shown by tne Jack Tars had evidently influenced the local public, for during- the fleet's visit to Auckland the arrests had been less than in ordinary times.
