THE NEW WATERPROOF FASHIONS.

"Waterproof" is no longer a name to conjure up visions of heavy, cumber-! some garments emitting a sickly odour of guttapercha. "Waterproof" can now be a mixture of jm permeable substance and crep de chine, crepe marocain, or taffetas silk, so light and dainty in appearance that it is difficult to distinguish the waterproof fabric from silk that has not been treated. Such waterproofed materials are being made up into smart wet-weather suits and coats. i A wrap-6ver coat of pari-taffetas looks particularly well on a wet day, in a street full of more or less bedraggledlooking people. Should the fold-over skirt fly back, a pretty yellow lining is revealed which also contributes a gay note to the costume. This note again shows to advantage as a lining to the shawl collar and to the cuffs of the sleeves. A smart little cloche hat can be made to match from the same material. j In black, pari-chine looks well, espe- : cially for a costume showing a coatcollar trimmed with a deep band of grey fur. As a general rule it is better for dresses and coats made of "pari" materials to be made as plain and j businesslike as possible, otherwise, if i too complicated a cut or too much j trimming is introduced the effect is apt to be banal. Many of the winter hats are being made of waterproof material, in all shapes and to suit all types. There is the sou-wester model, complete even to , the detail of chin strap. There is also ' a new kind of leather which is covered '• with a dressing that renders it water- I proof, and this, too, is being made up I Vt _n_£ l l nto Bhort Jackets and hats | m all kinds to match.
