OBITUARY.

MR. J. E. SMERDON. A well-known resident of Auckland for over half a century. Mr. John Edward Smerdon, died on May 15 at Kenyon Avenue, Mount Eden. Deceased had .cached the advanced age of S-t I years. Many years ago Mr. §merd">n : carried on a joinery business in the old City Mnrkcts. He was a Devonshire 'man, and naturally too to the sea. He visited the China, and Indian stations* |as well as South Africa, and Australia. (During the Maori War Mr. Sinerdon saw service in the Waikato. Later he was one of the founders of the. Masonic Lodge, Beata. He was also for many years Senior Woodward of ' City of Auckland Court Foresters. Mr. Smerdon's wife predeceased him. Deceased is survived by the following family: Messrs. Thomas. Edward, and Walter Smerdon, Mesdames R. Davis, Simm and M. Downie, of Ellerslie. TWO OLD THAMESITES. (By Tele_.upli.—Ou-n Correspondent.) THAMES, this day.
