VILLAGES DESTROYED. ITTTY PEOPIX KXIXED. •CONSTAXTINOPLE, May 15. ' A violent earthquake is reported to have occurred in the region of Erzcrum. Several villages have been destroyed. The human victims numbered about 50. The railways in the area have been damaged. —(Reuter.) Erzerum is a town in Turkish Armenia not far from Kara-su, the western source of the Euphrates. It stands 6200 ft above sea level, surounded by mountains. In spite of the transcontinental railway it ie still an entrepot between Europe and the interior of Asia, particularly Persia. It has much copper and iron. It at present contains only 45,000 people, tout more than 100 years ago it contained 100,000. Tt suffered exceedingly in the wars of 1529, 1854-55, and 1877-78.
