I ilrs. E. X. Xew. of Auckland, is a pasi s-euger by the Uliniaroa to Sydney tomorrow, and she will join up with the Orient steamer Orvicto on an extended trip to England and America. An "Afternoon" was given last week iut the Lyceum Clu'u as a farewell for Mrs. Braik, formerly of Carge.n and well known in Wanganui. by the guests at Cargen. During the afternoon ,bridge was played, and afternoon tea, [was served in the luncheon room. A handsome vase was presented to Mrs. Braik as a token of remembrance during the afternoon, and Mrs. Braik made a suitable response. EMPIRE BALL. The Empire ball which was given last evening in the' Town Hall, by the combined societies of the Victoria League and the Navy League, to entertain the officers of the Special Service Squadron, was one of the most striking and crowded that has been held in Auckland. Tbe hall was very effectively decorated witb streamers of lycopodium inters|>crscd -with purple, green and gold lights depended from the gallery, shaded filled with cut ntkau palms. Hidden lights depended from the gallery shaded jin long rod. blue and white streamers, and the huge centre lights were also hidden in long graceful streamers in the same patriotic colours, while under the gallery massed foliage threw up the dancer.. The stage was -particularly pretty, being Ut up by coloured lights and "arranged as a Maori scene with the real carved frontpicee of a Maori eating house lent by Mr. W. Hall, and a Maori maiden rcclininsr inside on a mat. The supper was spread in- the concert chamber, where chairs were arranged for a sitting of :i!tli at each supper, and the scene presented by the tables witli the decorations of scarlet salvia reflected great credit on I hose concerned. The supper entertainment of the distinguished guests was arranged upsta : rs. Supper was also spread in the lower supper room, and buffets were in the lounge. The guests were received at the entrance by Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Xapicr on behalf of the Victoria League, and by Mr. A. 0. Lunn and Mrs. Middleton, wife of Commander Middleton, on behalf of the Navy League. Mrs. Napier was in rich pale mauve -brocade. Miss Mowbray grey charmeuse and cream lace, and Mrs. Middleton lemon charmeuse and T>Tue girdle. Upon the arrival of the vice-regal party they proceeded to the stage, which had been arranged as a drawing room. Her Excellency wore a handsome gown of henna brocade and ornaments to match. The Hon.
