WANOANTI, Thursday. ■ The winter meeting of the Wanganul Jockey Club opened to-day in fine, sunny weather, and there was a large attendance. The track was In g«od order, and some excellent racing resulted. In the run home, Buckeye held his own, and won by four lengths from Mahuru, who beat Kipling by eight lengths, the last-named Just beating Rowan for third place, then came Oak Rose and Koaming. Tokomoana lost his rider in the first round. Sir Roseberry wouiu have been hard to beat had he not met with a mishap through Achilleou falling. The Steeplechase. Master Peter was the public fancy for the Wanganui Steeplechase, but Black Art and Ranui were nearly as well supported, while Oakleijfh, l>lck, Starland. ami San Forte were most sought after of the other*Ranni went off in front, with War Loan, Starland and San Forte next, but going along the back the order was Ranui, War Loan, San Forte aiid Master Peter. By the time the stand was reached Ranui was still showing the way to Master Peter, San Forte, Black Art, Starland and War Loan, with Polthogue aud Oakleigh last. Dick, who jumped badly from the start, having come to grief. There was little alteration till crossing the top. where Black Art ran to the front from Kanul, San Forte and Master Peter, while Oakletgn was away back, last. With. the. exception of Captain Sarto all went to the' post for the Century Hurdle Race. En 'Route was first choice, about £200 better supported than Eerie, with Omahu. Santiago, and Prince Rufus next in demand, while Antler was nearly the outsider of the Held. Prince Rufue was the ■Urst to show out, with En -Route and Peter Ainans next. Going past the stand En Route was in front, with 'Prince Kufus, -First Born, Oniahu, Eerie, Vagabond, .Antler, Peter Ainnns and Santiago following In that order. Peter Ainans was the pilot before the back stretch was reached, with Eerie, Prince Rufus, First Bom, En Route and Omahu racing ns named. The field bunched up turning for nome, and Bounetter, who had come right round the outside, got in front at the distance and beat Diamond Ring by half a length, with Marqueteur a length and a-half away, third. Then came Santonio. Peter Maxwell, Crucelle, Trespass and Velociform, Battle Knight being last. Favourite Well Beaten. All started in the Borough Handicap, Mlrensonta bein» first choice, and he was heavily supported, being about £400 better backed than Gienross, with Civility, Hipo, Lady Fingers, Martian Mfc-s and Ecuador backed as named.
