FATAL ACCIDENT.

DRIVER FALLS FROM LORRY.

When, driving a three-horse lorry over the kerbstone in Kingstone Avenue, Mount Koskill, yesterday, in order to deposit scoria on a section. William James Morley, employed by Winstone, Ltd., lost his balance and fell off the lorry on to the footpath. One of the wheels passed over his head, death being instantaneous.

The deceased was a married man, 59 years of age, residing in Islington Avenue, and leaves a wife and three grown-up children. An inquest was held before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., to-day. Mr. C. Morley stated that his brother was a thoroughly competent driver, having been employed by Winstone, Ltd., for the past 35 years. Mr. F. Spooner, plasterer, said that he ■was .-working on a new building in Kingstone Avenue yesterday when, deceased arrived witli a lorry load of scoria. The lorry crossed the footpath, but got stuck in the clay on the section. After a yard of the scoria had been unloaded deceased took his team on to the road again to make another'attempt to get through the clay. The lorry took the kerb so violently that the driver was thrown off, the rear right wheel passing over his body and head. Dr. F. W. Fullerton was immediately summoned, but could only pronounce life extinct. Deceased's head-, chest, and abdomen, were crushed, any of these injuries being sufficient to cause death. A verdict that deceased was aecidently killed by being run over by a lorry, there being no blame attachable to anybody, was returned.
