In their match against Surrey the South Africans made 22S runs in their first innings (Nourse 62, Deane 19). Sadler took two wickets for 23 runs. Fender two for 56, Peach four for 44. Nourse played cautiously on a sodden wicket. He was batting 12S minutes.
Surrey, whose first innings score was 223, declared their second innincs closed with two wickets down for 136 (Cook 38, Hobbs not out 79, Shepherd not out 13). South Africa in their second innings lost two wickets for S3 (Commaile 22, Taylor not out 30, Hands not out 12). The match was therefore drawn.
Hobbs and Cook put on 92 in 89 minutes for Surrey. They declared 20 minutes after the tea adjournment, leaving the South Africans 75 minutes in which to play. They survived the ordeal on a wicket which made the bowling tricky.—(A. and N.Z.).
