FOOD SUPPLIES.

"There is probably not a single motor lorry put of commission to-day," remarked the head of a large Auckland warehouse in discussing the strike in relation to its effect upon the transport of food and other goods. It was pointed out to a "Star" representative that the majority of the large distributors possessed several big motor lorries -which ordinarily were used ia and around the city for the conveyance of merchandise. These lorries had practically been mobilised to carry geeds comparatively long distances. One firm had decided to send their motors as far north as Helensville, and another as- far south as' Pokeno. Such long trips would not be remunerative, but the aim was to reduce to a minimum the inconvenient caused to permanent customers by tha stoppage of the trains. The carrying of goods by motor is not confined to city firms, for a large, motor lorry arrived in Auckland to-day from Waimauku, carrying mails, passengers and goods, and returned this afternoon with, a full load. Similarly mptcr vehicles from other centres streamed in and out of the city.
