SURFDALE GALA DAY.

The Surfdale Welfare and Progressive League held a sports gathering last Saturday at Surfdale, which proved a hnge success. Favoured with beautiful weather a very enjoyable day was spent by all present, and great credit is due to the committee and the band of workers, who through their efforts, made the gathering ali that could be desired. A plain and fancy dress ball took place in the hall during the evening, and was attended by 150 couples. Miss N. Etheridge was awarded first prize for ladles' fancy costume, with Miss 0. McFarlane second. Mr. C. Johnston (as Sambo) first for mon, and Mr W. Brown second. The following are. the results :— Open Handicap, one mile.—W. A. Dawkins 1, J. Hookes 2, W. A. Brown 3. Single Ladies' Race.—Miss Lee 1. Miss New 2, Miss White 3. Married Ladies' Race.—Mrs. Davis 1, Mrs. Hill 2. Mrs. Williams 3. Married Men's Race.—Mr. Prlng 1, Mr. Johnston 2, Mr. T. Brown 3. Tug of War. —Married men beat the single men.
