BIRKENHEAD TENNIS TOURNEY

RAIN SPOILS PLAY. FINAL GAMES POSTPONED. Rain set in about noon yesterday at Northcote, with the result that no further matches of the tennis tournament were completed beyond those published yesterday. AH the remaining competitions were postponed. The men's A and B singles, ladies' singles, men's doubles, and the junior championship arc to be completed next Saturday afternoon, play commencing at one o'clock. The ladies doubles and combined doubles are to be completed on Saturday week, play starting at 1 p.m. The organisation of the tournament was excellent. In addition to the heavy work entailed'by his secretarial duties, Mr.' R. 3. Corbett controlled the order of play,. Mr. J. R. Gray was in charge of boards. Mr. ,T. _\ Potter (assisted by Mr. H. G. Johnston) in charge of handicaps and record sheets. Mr. W. C. Morrtn referee and in charge of balls, and Mr. H. G. Johnston in charge of courts as well as Press steward. ' The catering was undertaken by the club, arid proved no light task. The luncheon arid afternoon tea provided reflected great credit on the organisers, Mrs. R. J. Corbett and Mr. Herrick (Friday), Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Tyer (Saturday), and Mrs. H. Cadness, jun.. and Mr. W. C. Morrin (Moilday), who were assisted by bands of willing workers. During the afternoon four of tbe officials consoled themselves for tbe postponement of tbe tennis games by engaging iv a pairs bowling competition on the Waitemata bowling green adjoining, when Messrs. H. G. Johnston and J. F. Potter defeated. Messrs. W. C. Morrin and B. J. Corbett, by 21 points to 18. HAMILTON TOURNAMENT. HAMILTON, Monday.
