i ■ a PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. FINALS PLAYED TO-DAY. YESTERDAY'S PLAY DESCRIBED. Play in the Auckland Provincial amateur golf championship tournament was continued at tbe Middlemore links yesterday. Two rounds of the championship were played, leaving S. F. Gunson, C. Clements, R. J. Hamilton and R. D. Wright in the semi-finals, which were decided to-day. The first round was played during the morning. 11. B. Lusk was beaten by G. F. Gunson, a very young and most promising player, on the 19th green. Gunson was 1 tip at the 17th, which went to Lust in 5, making the game all square. The game at tbe 10th resulted ln a win for Gunson, with a 4 to Lusk'a 5. R. M. George, a scratch player, was beaten by J. H. Goss, New Zealand amateur champion. George was 1 up at the turn, and after having lost the 12th and halving the 13ib, he was 2 up and 5 to play, and although coming home was accounted for in 40 by George, the latter was beaten by Goss, who played good golf, winning on the 18th green by 1 up. From the turn the card read as follows: —George, 3, 4, 5, 4, 6, 4, 5, 5, 4 —40; Goss, 4, 9, 4, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4 4—36. The game between W. B. Colbeck and W. Brander ended in favour of the lastnamed on She 18th green, 1 up. in his match with J. Forbes, C. Clements gradually forged ahead, until he was 4 up at the 13th. The 14th went, to Clement* in 4, ending the game in his favour by o up aud 4 to play. As a result chiefly of exceptional putting the game between H. S. Rose and J. R. Hamilton resulted in a win for tbe latter by 2 up and 1 to play. The game 3. B. Lusk v. N. Bell was finished on the 15th green in favour of Bell. Bell's long play was very good, with the result that he won with 5 and 3. J. McOwon and Gardner had a well-con-tested game, which respited in a win for Gardner, 2 up. The game J. L. Clark ,v. R. D. Wright was well contested, being taken to the 10th green, wlferc Wright, present holder of the title, finished 1 up. THE SECOND ROUND. The match between G. -*. Gunson and J. H. Goss resulted in the second defeat by Gunson of a champion. Both played patchy golf going out, and at the turn Gosa was 1 up. Gunson made a fine recovery, and outplayed Goss coming in. Clements showed good form, W. Brander was defeated on the 15th green, 4 up and 3 to play. The match, R. J. Hamilton v. N. Bell, except throngh the greens, was slightly in favour of Bell. The putting of Hamilton was the deciding factor throughout. The 18th was halved inSs, making Hamilton tbe winner, 1 up. __ It. D. Wright bad a comfortable win against R. O. Gardner. He played tine golf and decided the issue after' a good effort by Gardner, on the loth green, being 4 up and 3 to play. BOGEY HANDICAP. The bogey handicap was played in the morning concurrently with the first round in the championship, and resulted; as follows :— _ _ J. H. Goss (scr), all square; R. George (scr),' 2 down; T. Gouldlng (5), 2 down; R. 3. Hamilton (5), 2 down; H. Horton (6), 2 down; 3. L. R. Bloomflcld (0), 2 down; A. Fairburn <11), 2 down; C. F. Gardner (5), 3 down; H. W. Tidmaish (6), 3 down; E. B. Brown (9), 3 down; H. T. Merritt (11), 3 down. The six players who tied for second place will decide the issue to-day. MEDAL HANDICAP. Gouldlng from A. H. Magson, after a round of 68 holes. THE ROTORUA TOURNAMENT. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) ROTORUA, Monday. The Rotorua ladies' golf tournament championship was continued to-day. Results:— Miss Bell beat Miss Snodgrass, 2 nnd 1; Miss Banks beat Mrs. Ijrasdcn, 3 and 1; Miss Gainprill beat Miss Paton, 3 and 2; Mrs. Blyth beat Miss Holmes, 2 up. The matches . were followed by . a good muster of onlookers, who were rewarded by seeing some excellent play. The best round was put up by Miss Gambrill, 82 (par 76). so far the best card of the tournament. Miss Banks, a seventeen-year-old local player, caused a surprise by defeating her much more experienced club-mate, Mrs. Luuisdcn. Miss Paton had to forfeit a hole through her caddy pressing down some grass on the putting green. The semi-finals, played in the afternoon, resulted in Miss Bell winning from Miss Banks by a putt on the eighteenth green, aud Mrs. Blyth beating Miss Gambrill. 3 and 2. The finals will be played to-morrow (Tuesday), between Miss Bell (Wellington) and Mrs. Blyth (Hamilton). WELLINGTON TOURNAMENT. . (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. After the first round of match play for the provincial championship, the following were left in:—Horton (Mastcrton). Tucker (Hutt). Chesney (Hutt). Drake (Miramar), Hankins (Wellington). Hales (Wellington), Baneavis, A. Duncan (Wellington). In tbe second round, Horton heat Balpenvls, Tucker beat Chesney, Hankins beat Drake, and Duncan beat Hales. SOUTHLAND TOURNAMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Monday. At the Invcrcargill Golf Club Easter tournament to-day R. A. Wilson won the amateur championship of Southland, defeating C. A. Masters by 2 up and 1 to play over 36 holes. The junior championship of the province was won by Ivor. Carr, who defeated the Tapper, 4 and 3.
