CAUGHT RED-HANDED.
BURGLARS IN WINE STORE. REMANDED FOR A WEEK. "They were caught red-handed on Saturday night, sir," said Chief-Detective Cummings, when Leslie Martin (26) and Frederick George Lester (19) were charged at the Police Court this morning with breaking and entering the premises of the Kaipara W'ne Co., Stanley Street, with intent to commit a crime therein. A remand was granted till April 28. Bail was not sought. It is stated that the police received complaints that wine was disappearing from the store, which is an old building. Consequently Detective Barling and Plain-clothes Constaole Sutherland were assigned to the "job," and on Saturday night they secreted themselves in the building, to await developments. Towards 10 o'clock two men appeared outside the store. While one kept watch the other, it is alleged., entered the store. He reached out his hand to take a bottle, and Detective Barling seized him. It is alleged that a fierce tussle ensued in the darkness of the store, in the course of which the detective sustained a slight injury to one hand. Eventually both were secured and taken to the police station.
