This 3000 kilowatt turbo-alternator was the first of the new machines introduced by the Auckland Electric Power Board to supply the electrical requirements of the city. Imported from England, this unit cost £25,000. Two 5000 k.w. units have also been recently installed. In each of them the turbine rotor weighs four tons, and the alternator /otor eight and a-half tons, these combined rotors running at 3000 revolutions per minute. Despite the high speed at which this hu C c weight is spinning there is no vibration, a fact due to the revolving parts being perfectly balanced. It is possible to stand a coin on its ed»e oh the most overhung part of the machine , while it is ia motion.
