James Brown, Socialist member for South Ayrshire, has been appointed Lord High Commissioner to Hie (tencral Assembly of the Church of Scotland. He j says: "As a wee laddie I visited Holy- i rood Palace ami inspected with awe the ancient home of the '--marts, and never > dreamt that one day 1 would tome to ! live there with £2000 salary. My wife : gasped at the news. 1 am going to show j Scotland and the world that just be- \ cause a Socialist who has lived in a ; miner's cottage at a rent of ten pounds ■ yearly, has been appointed to a high j office, this does not mean any departure j from historic traditions. I shall still live | in the two rooms and kitchen, whither I j took a mill girl wife. Although T shall live a few weeks at Holyrood, hold levees j and ride in a State coach, I will gladly j return home to the dearest place on j earth, where I have lived since I have i been married, and have been superintendent Of the Sunday school for thirtvlive years. It's the kirk that has made mc what I am." —("Sun.")
