- .1. ■ — THE WAITEMATA C__UB. The Waitemata Swimming Club held a successful gala at the Tepid Baths last evening. The final of the 100 yds handicap was won by J. Enwright, in 59 2-os. in the 100 yds ladies' scratch invitation race, contested by Misses Shand, Stockley and Bell, an unfortunate incident occurred. Misses Shand and Stockley got away together, but Miss Bell was late, and a cry arose from a section of the spectators oi "False start." The starter made no intimation to this efTect. and Miss Stockley led at the tlrst turn. Here, an official told Miss Shand to stop. She did so, but the other two raced hack together, Miss Bed slowing up, as the spectators gave cries or " Stop." Miss Stockley swam to the next turn at top speed, but as she turned a swimmer dived In and stopped her. Hirst scored the loaars' only goal. HARBOUR. RACE GALA. The Ponsonby Swimming and Life Savini. Club will hold their annual Harbour Race Carnival in tbe Shelly Beach Baths tomorrow afternoon. A most interesting programme of swimming and diving events will be conducted. The chief eveut is the harbour swim from Northcote to ShellsBeach baths for the Molloy shield. A record number of 114 entries have been received, including all Auckland's best swimmers, as well as representatives from Thames. Hamilton and Wanganui. Owing to the early tide this event will start from Northcote at 2 p.m.
