PROHIBITED PUBLICATIONS.
RESTRICTIONS WITHDRAWN. During and after the war, the Government issued Orders-in-Council, under Section 40 of the Customs Act. 1913, prohibiting the importation of various newspap-ers and publications on various grounds. In the current "Gazette," several of these Orders-inCouncil, issued at various dates from September, 1915, to March, 1920. have been revoked. The publications which were barred under these orders were the following: — Newspapers "Direct Action," and "Solidarity," and all other printed matter published or printed or purporting to be printed or published by or on behalf of the society known as "The Industrial Workers of the World:" (Date of Order-in-Council, September 20, 1915.) Newspapers and periodical literature as follows:—"Atlanta American." "Atlanta Georgian," "Boston American," -'Chicago American," "Chicago Examiner," "Los Angeles Examiner," "I.ob Angeles Herald," "Morgan Journal," "New York American," "New York Deutsches Journal," San Francisco Examiner." "San Francisco Sunday American." "Sunday Georgian," "Cosmopolitan Magazine," "Good Housekeeping Magazine," "Harper's Bazaar," "Hearst's Magazine." "Motor Magazine," "Ross's Mag-a.-ne." "Bull" (illustrated newspaper). (Date of OnJer-in-Council, December 21, 1910.) Newspaper "The Gallic American." (Date of Order-in-Council, January 16, 1917.) Periodical "Ross's Month}'," being a publication edited by R. S. Ross, 354, Queen Street, Melbourne. (Date of Order-in-Council, February 12, 1917.) Periodical American publications: "The Dilineator," and "The Masses." (Date of Order-in-Council, March 12, 1917.) Periodical publication: "The International: the organ of the International Socialist League IS.A.)" published at Johannesburg. All other printed matter published, or purporting to be published by or on behalf of the International Socialist League, South Africa. (Date of Order-in-Council, July 22, 1919.) Periodical publication: "The Call: An Organ of International Socialism," published in London. (Hate of Order-in-Council, August 19, 1919.) Periodical publication, "Knowledge and Unity," published in Brisbane, Queensland. (Date of Order-in-Council, October ti, 1919.) Book, "Red Europe," purporting to be written by Frank Anstcy, M.P., and published at Melbourne, Victoria. (Date of Order-in-Council. November 27, 1919.) Book: "The New Unionism," purporting to he written by Andre Tridon, published in New York. (Date of Otder-in-Council. March 10, 1920.) "Sinn Fein Republic Brotherhood Badges; Portraits of Edward or Eamon de Valera, President of the so-called Irish Republic." (Date of Order-in-Council. March 16, 1920.) Possibly some of the publications prohibited by Order-in-Council remain under the ban. Tn any case the general Order stands which prohibits the importation of any document which incites, encourages, advises, or advocates violence, lawlessness or disorder, or expresses any seditious intention.
