THE MOTOR OLYMPIA.

The Auckland Olympia Motor Kxhibi- «„_ promises to be a real success, both Lm the public and the promoters' point t The promoters of this exhibition (the Auckland Motor Trade Assoriation) ar" spariug neither pains nor money to not this, the first Auckland Olvnrpia Motor Exhibition, on in a manner that we feci sure will surprise the majority of people-surprise them in the number" and selection of ears and trucks that will be shown in this outpost of the Empire and also in the careful and thorough attention that is being- paid to the detail management of the exhibition. Over --000 will have been expended by the executive aud the individual exhibitors by the <late, February 23. when the exhibition will be opened to the public. Spacious aisles have been provided on both floors of the exhibition building so that good views of the exhibits may be obtained. The value of cars and trucks to be shown will approximate £80,000, com: prising 100 cars and some 25 trucks. A feature of the exhibition .will be the orchestral music, which will be rendered both afternoon and evening. - .An orchestra of 12 instrumentalists will be provided on each of the two floors, and the executive have not spared expense to secure the very best talent in Auckland. At the recent. . Christ-' church Olympia the public went again and again to hear the musical pror gramme, and this is sure to be the case in Auckland also. The writer lias seen the personnel of the two orchestras and can assure the public of Auckland of a musical treat when they visit the exhibition. The lighting of the exhibition has had very careful and expert consideration and will be carried out by 250 four hundred candle power lamps. These lamps will be carried in specially , constructed semi-direct lanterns of ~ quite large dimensions, being 2ft 6in high by 2ft in width and of various shades and colours. There will be 125 of these lanterns on each floor. The admission charge has been fixed at 1/, children under twelve 6d. The exhibition will be open daily from 10.20 a.m. to 10 p.m. except on the opening day, when the time of opening has been fixed for 7 p.m. GETTING AT THE CYLINDERS. The removal of the cylinder block cannot be effected without first detaching a number of other components. The procedure generally adopted is as follows:— First drain the radiator and the water pump if one is fitted. Next, if the engine be of the overhead camshaft arid detachable cylinder head type remove the o.h. valve gear and head, taking care, if possible, not to damage the copper asbestos gasket. If the engine is of the fixed head type, the sparking plugs, compressed taps, and valve caps can be removed, while it is sometimes easier to take out the valves also while the cylinders are still bolted down. Having turned off the petrol supply, remove the carburetter, which may generally be left in plac.V without disturbing the con-, trols, andf'detach induction and exhaust manifolds: Then. provided that nothing else hinders one from getting at the holding down nuts, the cylinders or cylinder block may be removed. It is advisable to have a friend to help, even in the case„of quite a small engine, when one person? can remove the block, the other assisting and seeing that the pistons and connecting rods are not damaged accidentally. With a larger engine the cylinders can be removed with some assistance; but one's task is greatly facilitated if a block and tackle is used, as the cylinders can be lifted a little at,a time without much effort. Failing this, it may be possible to prise up the block sufficiently at each end to allow of two steel rods being passed under it. These, may be gripped in each hand by tw:o persons, standing one on each side of the chassis, and used as a sort of stretcher, on which the block may be lifted and carried.
