CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT. THE AUCKLAND GATHERING. BIG ENTRY OF LADIES— Thrice happy were the circumstances in which the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's annual championship tournament was commenced at the Stanley Street courts this morning, a capable and enthusiastic committee, brilliant weather and satisfactory entries, considered numerically and qualitatively, being the factors which give promise of a successful and enjoyable gathering. Additional interest is given to the tournament by reason of the fact that there is a fair preponderance of visiting players, representatives of the Wellington, Hawke's Hay, and Waiknto provinces being among those participating. Among these is Dr. Laurenson, of Matamata. who. with the brilliant young Auckland player, E. L. Bartleet, is considered as likely to be a finalist for the Heme Cup. The present holder of the championship trophy, A. Sims, who for health reasons is not taking part in tournaments this season, is not competing. A particularly strong entry of ladies has been received. Miss Marjorie Macfarlane, fresh from the Wellington provincial championship tournament, where she annexed the ladies' singles from Miss Wellwood to the tune of 4—b", o—o, 6—.1, is considered as the most dangerous competitor in the ladies' division. The courts, which have received particularly careful attention."are in splendid condition, despite the parching, nature of the weather, and it is ex- j pected that they can be relied upon to carry the burden of the tournamont without giving cause for reasonable complaint. Play commenced at an early hour this morning and was continued this afternoon before a well-filled gallery. The tournament will conclude on the afternoon of Titesdav. Anniversary Day. when the finals'should attract a big attendance of the public. Headed by the association's enthusiastic president, _r. H. 0.
