BANKRUPTCIES IN 1923.

INCREASE OVER PREVIOUS YEAR. • Last month 60 bankruptcies were, .registered throughout the Dominion, as compared with 4!) in December. 1922, and making 090 for the year. The insolvenienees recorded during each month of the past three years show as under: —

In the past two years the number of I bankruptcies has been very heavy, and we are thus still feeling the effects of the slump of 1921. It was net until May. 1921. that there was any noticeable increase in bankruptcies, when the number was practically double, what it was in the previous month; since then the number has never gone below 32 in any month, except January. 1022. Last year 49 was the lowest in any one month, and the highest was 71 in November last. Once more farmers account for the greatest number of insolvencies, labourers coming nest and the motor trade third.
