VICTORIA BEATS N.S.W. MELBOURNE, January 2. 1 Victoria defeated New South Wales *in the Sheffield Shield' match by 43 runs, ! the scores being: Victoria. 285 and 412; New South Wales, 208 and 380. In New South Wales' second innings yesterday Kippax scored 72, Kelleway 98 and Hendry 31. Ryder took four wickets for 81, Hartkopf three for 101 , and Wallace two for 80. The wicket showed signs of wear, but was fairly good. Kippax and Kelleway fought a" splendid uphill fight. They batted more freely than on the previous day and their partnership gave the beat cricket of the match. They added 127 for the sixth wicket. Kippax was first to go. He gave a difficult chance at 47. Hendry was free and lively. Kelleway with a century apparently assured was given out leg before to Hartkopf after a most serviceable innings that lasted 233 minutes. SYDNEY, January 2. -The match between Queensland and New South Wales' second eleven was i drawn, the scores being: Queensland, j 309 and 285; New South Wales, 442 and 25 for one wicket. In New South Wales' first innings Mallarkey scored 04, Punch and Katciiffe 74 each, Wells 70, and Brown 00 (not out). Hornibrook took three wickets for 158, Rowe three for 50, and B. Oxenham three for 70. The Queenslander.s had a gruelling field day in the heat yesterday. The bowling strength of the visitors was fairly formidable, but their fielding was generally weak, and numerous chances were missed. With a big total to overtake the battin«, particularly in the early status, was slow and of the safe order. Punch was a notable exception, playing free, punishing cricket. . • The match concluded to-day when Queensland in the second inning's scored 285—Thompson 134, Behstead 54. R. K. Oxenham 38. Wall took four wickets for 107 and Tliatcher three for 7«. When play commenced it looked as if Queensland would be dismissed cheaply, five wickets going down for 66, but Thompson's splendid innings, particularly in partnership with Benstead, shattered the home team's hopes of victory. Thompson compiled his score by powerful driving and pretty leg strokes. BenPtead also .batted enterprisingly. Thompson was at the wickets-224 minutes, and hit.-13 fours and. one five.
