A HIGHLAND GATHERING. . <l DANCING AND ATHLETICS. (From Our Own Correspondent.i WHAXUAREI. Wednesday. Wnipu was en fete on New Year's Day. the occasion lieiiij: the fifty-third Highland gathering and games. Udder ti cloudless sky and in ideal summer weather a record attendance was drawn from a very wide area. The fund ion was under the auspices of the Waipu Caledonian Society, estnblislied in IJS7I. Each succeeding year sees ■ no abatement in the keen interest iv this anntinl re-union ami exposition of national Scottish music, piping, dancing and games. A good* 'programme of running events brought forth large fields in each event. The venue oC the gathering was the Caledonian Park, which is the property of the society, and excellent arrangements had lieeh made for general smooth working and [Comfort of visitors nml competitors. As a purely Scottish gathering the kilts and the dancing anil pip'.ng events, of n. very high order throughout wen; watched with the keenest interest. New Zealand championships allocated were : —Bagpipe music (Strathspey and. reel), for laddies under IS years, and this was annexed bill. Clark, of Dnnedln, wan of opinion that in the pipes a good class of competitor had c.me forward. He was n stranger lo the district, but he was very favourably impressed witb the pipers' performance. Speaking of the. dancing he said the girls' dancing showed a belter standard than the gents. The principal prize taker was MV. l>. Ferguson, of Auckland. In pip- ' ing. while the Misses McNaughton. Olseu and McLachlau also did Well iv .lancing.
