THE NEW YEAR.

A JOYOUS USHERING. GREAT CROWD IN CITY. A perfect• night presaged the passing of the Old Year. The streets were crowded, by the people of the city and surroundings, with a large sprinkling of country visitors, and the shops did excellent business in the sale of late New Year gifts and astonishing devices to make astonishing noises. These latter were freely used, and there was such a combination of sound, from the squeaking of balloons to the blaring of trumpets, that is heard only on the one night in the year. There were no signs of disorder in the thronged streets. It was a happy crowd, and the Eve went rapidly to the first stroke of midnight, when all the sirens and whistles available swelled into a mighty shrill of welcome to the New Year. The traffic was splendidly handled, and those who stayed in the city to see the Old Year out and the New Year in were especially grateful for the late trams run for their convenience.
