ADDITIONAL BURSARIES. OBJECTS OF THE FUND. At a meeting of the trustees of the Trentliam Scholarship Fund Mr. Sidney Kirkcaldic presided, and General Sir Edward Chaytor? Messrs. J. Caughley (Director of Education), and M. J. Reardon were also present. It was decided to renew 7!) existing bursaries (amounting to £2105), and to grant 53 additional applications (amounting to £1600). making a total distribution of £3705.

Children resident in New Zealand, eligible to make application for assistance, are: Firstly, those of soldiers and nurses who died on active service while serving with the Expeditionary Forces; secondly, those children (resident in New Zealand) of soldiers and nurses who Were wholly or partially disabled as the result of military service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces; thirdly, children (resident in New Zealand) of soldiers and nurses who were on active service with the New Zealand) Expeditionary Forces, and last in order 'of priority, children of soldiers and nurses who served as members of the forces of .the British Empire, and who are now resident in' New' Zealand. The cardinal object of the Trentham Scholarship Fund is to assist the community by ensuring, as far as is possible, that the recipients of its benefits shall become good and capable citizens, having regard to each one's character and ability.

The bursaries are. therefore, intended as an aid to the maintenance and training as citizens of the bursars when they are: (a) Attending any public or private secondary school, or (li) attending any technical school, or (c) attending any University College, Agricultural College, or other professional school recognised by the University of New Zealand, or (d) "apprenticed to any trade, or (f) are otherwise working at any calling approved by the trustees. No children born after July 1, 1920, are eligible for a bursary.

The. bursaries commence not earlier than the flr,st day of January in the year following the date on which "tlie applicant reaches the age of 14 years or the the date on which the applicant obtains tlie Sixth Standard proficiency or competency certificate, N.Z. code, whichever date is earlier.
