THE INDIAN EMPIRE.

AFFAIRS IN BENGAL SWARAJ PARTY SUCCESSES. — A SIGNIFICANT MOVEMENT. (By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 1.30 p.m.) DELHI, November QO. The Afghan Government has satisfied the demands of the British Government in respect to the Barehor Spinchilla incident in 1021, when small detachments of British troops were waylaid and ambuscaded by the Waziris. As a result of the Afghan activities a Swaraj party consisting of non-co-operators who believed in entering legislatures in order to obstruct the Government, achieved a number of notable successes in the elections in the Bengal Council. The veteran Minister, Sir Surendranath Banerpeas, was defeated by a comparatively unknown Swarajist, Dr. Ray, in the Barrackpore division. Banerjeas had a majority of over 3000. So far there are thirty Swarajists elected and thirteen defeated. It is doubtful if they will command an independent majority.—(A. and N.Z.)
