INVESTIGATING INSULIN.

A great research organisation backed by a fund of a million dollars is to be started at Toronto and to be known as the Banting Medical Research Foundation in honour of the discoverer of insulin, Dr. Fred. G. Banting, who has already contributed two thousand pounds, a portion of his share of the 1923 Nobel prize. A committee of five has been formed to take preliniinary charge of the foundation and its financing and presently an appeal for funds will be made in Canada and the United States. Already many well-known people in both countries have signified their willingness to participate actively in the work. These include Lord Byng, Governor Genera) of Canada, United States Secretary of States Hughes, whose daughter was one of Dr. Banting's first patients, and former President Woodrow, Wilson.

The organisation will be patterned along the lines of the National Medical Research in England. It would give assistance to young scientists well adapted for research work but who can not follow their bent because of lack of funds. Such people would be required to go before a committee and state what they desired to do in the way of research. The committee would pass on the merits of the applicant's fitness for the work and either dismiss it or encourage it. The scope of the foundation will be international, though active research work for the present will be limited to Canadians.
