LIBRARY AND MUSEUM.
EAST HAMILTON PROPOSAL. (Bj- Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. Although the Borough Council refused a request of the Hamilton East Citizens' Association to establish a library in that part of the borough, the . council has now met the association to the extent of considering a poll on a proposal to purchase the Masonic Hall for municipal and public purposes. The association secured an option over the building a few weeks ago at what they consider a low price. His Worship the Mayor told the council last night that ' while he was not in favour of a number i of subsidiary libraries, yet the Hamil- j ton East Ratepayers' Association con- , sidered that as they had the offer of the Masonic Hall cheap it should be acquired as a social hall. Personally his Worship thought it could be used for social purposes and also for the nucleus of a museum. The town had lost some valuable collections of curios that should never have been allowed to leave the Waikato dimply because they had no where to keep thorn. He had at the present time three collections under offer if the borough could house them. Mr. W. Barton said that if the building was to be acquired as the nucleus of a museum he was heartily in accord with the proposal. The matter was referred to the Legal: and Finance Committee. I
