STANLEY BAY RECREATION RESERVE.
PLAYING FIELD.SOUGHT. The urgent need of a playing area for the Stanley Bay end of Devonport borough was further impressed upon the local council last evening by a deputation from the Stanley Bay Improvement Association. . The deputation asked for the- sympathetic co-operation of the I council-in preparing-for playing purposes' sufficient of. the park area to provide a hockey field and two tennis courts. - . >Mr. F. J. Dawson asked for the prosecution, of any contemplated road works in the Vicinity, so that sufficient spoil might be obtained to raise a portion of ' the park one foot, which would ensure a permanently dry surface. By the cooperation of residents he believed that donations of money and soil could be obtained to materially assist the project. He outlined a scheme whereby earth might be collected from residents in empty benzine tins and dumped into the council's carts by a system of regular collection. This method would provide good top soil for a playing field. Mr. J. H. Gentles supported Mr. Dawson's remarks, stressing the lack of any recreation facilities in the district, and promising the hearty support of all residents in any practicable scheme designed to improve the park area. He - considered that a portion of the £450 allocated for facing the retaining wall might with advantage be diverted to the object the deputation sought. ' The Mayor promised the deputation sympathetic consideration of their request, and arranged to meet a gathering of residents on the park next Tuesday afternoon.
