CUTTING UP ESTATES.

THE ROAD REQUIREMENTS. MATTER OF STANDARDISING. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") HAMILTON", this day. The necessity for establishing" standard requirements for subdivisional roads in the borough of Hamilton was stressed by Mr. A. E. Webb at the meeting of the local council last night, when he moved: "That in all-future subdivisions of land, before the council accepts dedication of streets, owners shaJl be required (1) to lay storm-water drains, sewers and water mains; (2) to la,y kerbing and channelling in concrete; (3) to metal full width of carriageway, -which shall lie 26 feet wide, the centre 14 feet to be covered with S inches of blue stone metal, side 6 ifeet to be covered with 6 inches of blue stone metal, all to be" well rolled with ■roller of not less than 8 tons: (4) footpaths shall he '20 feet wide, the inside 10 feet shall be laid with metal chips one inch deep, and tarred and sanded with two coats of tar well rolled with hand roller: the outer 10 feet shall be properly laid flown in grass." A lengthy discussion ensued, during which several councillors doubted the wisdom of enforcing such drastic re r quirements, as they might restrict progress. Mr. Watts thought it unreasonable that owners should be made to form streets ifar in advance of tho borough roads in the vicinity. In certain districts in Auckland elaborate subdivisional streets had been put down, while roads leading from them in all directions were in a state of nature. ITe wondered that some owners had not tested the legal position. Tt was generally conceded by the council that some standardisation was ! necessary, and the matter was referred !to the Legal and Finance Committee.
